Paving materials

The most used and therefore popular materials for paving the garden are gravel, bricks, bark chippings, and cobbles and pebbles. Gravel is cheap and it looks lovely paved along bushes and beds of flowers, being the perfect fit for Mediterranean, Oriental, and modern style gardens. The downsides to paving the paths through the garden with gravel is that they need regular weeding, and that any cat owner will notice that the little ball of fur is confusing the path with a huge litter box.

Bricks are a particularly smart choice if you have a rustic style house, but they go well with any type of house. In case you have a brick house, don’t make any aesthetic mistake, and match the bricks used on paving the paths through the garden with the bricks used in the construction of the house to have truly a harmonious and appealing look.

Bark chippings are the softest choice for garden paving, because they’re actually wood chips. They are a great addition for cottage gardens, but they go well with natural, woodland, and wildlife gardens as well. If you want to keep them in place, avoiding them being carried in other places by people who step on them, you should use endings, which will definitely make the chippings stay in their initial place.

Cobbles and pebbles might not be suitable for creating a path to the house entrance, but they are ideal as garden paving materials due to their lovely look. You can either let them loose, creating a natural effect that goes well with an Oriental garden style, or you could set them into cement to create a more sturdy and organized look that goes well with old-fashioned gardens.

Path designs

The design you choose for the path that goes through the garden should be in harmony with the overall look of the garden. Therefore, if you have an old-fashioned garden in the creation of which you intend to use bricks, bark chippings, or cobbles and pebbles, you should make curved paths along it, that should be branched out to make it possible to visit the entire garden. On the other hand, if you have a modern garden in which you intend to use gravel as construction material, you should make straight paths of paving that branch out in a symmetrical and ordered way to explore the whole garden.

No matter if you choose the curved design, or the straight path, the important thing you have to keep in mind when you are making these paths is to choose the appropriate materials in their construction to fit well with the garden’s appearance, and to make additional paths that are linked to it to give you the ability to explore as much of the garden as possible on foot, without having to step on the grass.
