The stone size you choose depends on the amount of space you have between your border and the edge of your lawn. You can make boardwalk path edging in a weekend, just by laying down wood. Use wood boards or recycled wood pallets to add a natural element to your garden and create height and interest.
Materials required:
- Wood planks – use any type of wood you like, new or secondhand. Use the width of available materials for the best effect.

Instructions:
- Lay down the planks in a row, alternating the direction of each plank as you go so that they overlap as if you were building a boardwalk path through sand dunes (hence the name). Avoid leaving gaps underneath the planks by selecting materials that are roughly equal in thickness. Be creative with your design choices! If possible, use materials with different widths to create an interesting pattern which will add more visual impact; this will also save on resources (new or hand-me-down) and cost less money if you’re working within a budget.

Bricks, in particular, are a great way to create low-maintenance borders that can also act as a wall and provide extra seating. They’re beautiful, sturdy, and versatile. If you have access to bricks that are the same color and material throughout, they can be an ideal way of creating a cohesive structure along your garden’s perimeter.
If you don’t have access to bricks—or if you want a more colorful finish—you could use other masonry materials such as cement blocks. These will also stand up well to the elements and ensure your garden border is around for many years.
