How to Build a Square Foot Garden

If space is limited, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t have a garden. With a bit of creativity, you can easily achieve your goal. You can grow vegetables, flowers or herbs, which is absolutely fantastic. In case you find this idea interesting, then here is how to build a square foot garden.

How to build the box frame

First of all, choose the place where you are going to place the box, and start building it right there. Building the box frame is the first thing you need to do. Basically, you can use any type of material you want except treated wood, due to the fact that it contains chemicals that can harm your soil, and therefore, your plants. Once you have chosen the boards, it is now time to create the box. You will need some screws and a drill. Divide the big square into equal small squares, using the same boards. It is recommended that you sink at least two screws at each end, in order to make it resistant, because when the soil is wet it will be extremely heavy and your garden might fall apart. You definitely don’t want this to happen, and this is why you must make sure that the whole box is very well built. This is not a hard job, and you will finish it quicker than you would have thought.

Fill the box with soil

Depending on what you want to plant, it is recommended that you choose a specific soil. You can go to the specific shops and ask someone specialized for advice, and therefore, you will know exactly what you need. Fertilizer is also very important, and you should also have this aspect in mind when creating your square foot garden. You will need to use it only from time to time, for a better result.

The last step, planting

This is probably the funniest part. It is up to you what you want to grow, as long as you will do it properly. For achieving that, you must be well informed. Therefore, it is recommended that you do some online research and read everything you need to know about what you want to plant. You will need to follow some important steps, such as keeping the right distance between them, the right season for planting, and so on. For example, if you decide to use seeds, it is important that you start planting them after the last frost. You have the possibility to plant flowers, herbs, and even vegetables. Whatever you choose to do, make sure that you will do a great job.
