You may be wondering what exactly is a perennial? Are you thinking of a particular type of plant, or maybe even a type of flower? Well, you would be right on both counts! Perennials are plants that are able to return year after year. While they may die back in the winter months, they come back to life in full force in the spring.
Examples of perennials include many kinds of flowers such as tulips, daffodils and hydrangeas. Herbs like lavender and chamomile are also great examples of perennials along with shrubs such as rhododendron, rosemary and boxwood.
Perennial plants can provide beautiful greenery for years to come and if cared for properly, some could live for 15 to 20 years!
Hint on How to Grow Your Perennials
To help ensure your plants thrive, it’s important to use the proper soil and follow a watering schedule. If you’d like to fertilize your perennials, we recommend using a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 or 8-8-8.
Your plants will prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. To keep the pH within this range, you can add peat moss or composted leaves at planting time or perlite in the potting mix if potted indoors.
Good drainage is also essential for healthy growth; if your perennial’s roots become waterlogged they will rot and die, so make sure to create openings in your containers that allow water to drain freely from excess rains or overwatering; these holes are commonly referred to as “drainage holes.” Also be sure not to place pots where they’ll collect standing water after heavy rains.
Perennials are great for a number of reasons. For example, they’re low-maintenance and affordable, and they provide years of blooming beauty with the proper care. As you can see from this list, we carry a wide variety of perennials to suit any garden or landscape.
