Water features are a must.
Water features are a must. They add a focal point to the garden, which is important in creating interest and depth. Adding a water feature can also attract wildlife like birds, butterflies and bees, making it a great option for those who want to make their garden more eco-friendly or to see animals that they might not otherwise see in an urban area. Water features also have the added benefit of being extremely relaxing — just being around the sound of running water has been proven to reduce stress and help you relax after a long day at work.
Water features do have their drawbacks though. If you live somewhere very cold in the winter, you will need to take special care of your water feature by draining it before winter sets in or risk cracking due to iced over water. Water features also tend to be expensive — adding even one fountain can easily set you back thousands of dollars, so if this is something you are interested in, it may be best to plan out your entire design before beginning construction so that costs can be spread out over time rather than hitting all at once as they would if you were doing everything at once.
Don’t forget the lighting.
You don’t want to be in the dark when it comes to lighting your garden. When you’re looking at the design of your garden and considering what features will work best, keep in mind that they need to be illuminated. The effects of a well-designed landscape lighting scheme will not only enhance the beauty of your garden, but also add safety benefits and security. Lighting for pathways will take away any trip hazards, and outdoor seating areas can be created for entertaining in the evening hours.
Lighting enhances water features and structures, as well as vegetable gardens. For security reasons or just ambience, the right kind of lighting can transform your garden into an outdoor room with a sense of drama. You can use various types of lighting fixtures to create different moods or focus on specific objects within your landscape.
It is important that you plan out how you want everything lit as early on in the design process as possible—it will not only keep things running smoothly throughout construction but also help you avoid making costly mistakes later on down the line!
Structures have to have some serious wow factor.
No matter what you choose, make sure your structure has some serious wow factor. In other words, choose a beautiful centerpiece that will pull the whole garden together. A huge tree in your backyard can serve as the focal point of your entire garden design! Or perhaps you’d enjoy a pond with a relaxing fountain? Or you could put in a beautiful statue made of marble to create an elegant and refined look.
Let’s take a look at some stunning structures to incorporate into your garden:
- The classic Italian-style pergola adds depth and texture to any yard design by defining space without blocking the view. A perfect place for family dinners or romantic dates, pergolas are both stylish and practical.
- If you’re looking for something with even more wow factor, consider adding a gazebo! Gazebos, often round or octagonal in shape, are ideal if you want to create an eye-catching focal point in your back yard while also offering guests shelter from rain or sun.
- If shade is important but visual impact isn’t at the top of your wishlist, consider adding an arbor over one of your walkways or sitting areas instead! Whether it’s wood or wrought iron – the choice is yours!
An abundance of perennials is key.
Perhaps you don’t have much experience with gardening. Yet, you want to grow plants that provide color and beauty year after year. The answer is perennials! Perennials are plants that bloom every year without having to replant them. Perennials are the best option for beginners because they are easier to maintain than annuals and they will give your garden the colorful look you desire.
A perennial garden is very flexible in style and design as well. Because perennials can be planted close together it creates a space that is cohesive and harmonious as well as easy maintenance for the gardener. You can also add annual flowers in between your perennials to create different textures or colors throughout the year!
Stay away from plain grass.
Because of the maintenance, monotony, and negative environmental impact of grasses as lawns, more people are turning to other options. It’s an extremely challenging task to make a turf lawn look good year-round. For instance, in winter many grasses turn yellow or brown due to frost and snow cover. This is not only ugly but can also cause physical discomfort when walking on it in bare feet. In addition, because they don’t produce food or shade—two very important features that plants provide—lawns are essentially dead space in your garden. By adding alternative plants that are still green during winter months (such as evergreen shrubs), you will have visual interest year round.
If you want a groundcover that provides a similar appearance to grass but requires less maintenance and water consumption, native sedges may be for you! There are several species available for our area: Carex oshimensis (a type of Japanese sedge) is a bold looking plant that is perfect for erosion control on slopes; Carex pansa (California dune sedge) is very drought tolerant and great if you need something low growing; finally, Carex tumulicola (dune sedge) has large leaves that give it an unusual appearance amongst other groundcovers
Fresh organic produce grown in your garden is a great use of space!
Raised beds are great for growing vegetables, fruits and herbs. The bed is made of a wooden frame filled with soil. The soil level is higher than the ground level, so you don’t have to bend down as far to tend to your crops. You can even build the bed on top of a concrete patio or driveway! Raised beds also allow you to control what type of soil you use and they use space more efficiently than traditional gardens.
Home Grown Food Is Better For Your Health
Growing food at home allows you to know exactly what goes into what you eat. When you go to the grocery store, produce may have traveled hundreds of miles before it gets packaged and put on the shelf. It’s often treated with preservatives and other chemicals that help keep it fresh longer, but those chemicals can be harmful if ingested over long periods of time. Produce from local farms may not be much better; farmers may use pesticides or other chemical treatments in order to get rid of bugs or weeds that could harm their crops. By planting your own garden, you don’t have to worry about accidentally ingesting harmful chemicals when harvesting your crops because there aren’t any! Plus, gardening itself is a great exercise for physical health (and mental health too!).
A garden should reflect your style, so introduce some pieces that make it uniquely you.
When you want to make a unique garden, it’s important not to overthink it. Just because your neighbor has a garden full of six-foot sunflowers doesn’t mean that you should automatically follow suit. Instead, take this opportunity for self expression and allow your personality to shine through in your outdoor space!
It’s okay if the result is surprisingly different from any other garden in your neighborhood (or in the entire town). In fact, the unexpected contrast might even be desirable!
The only caveat: don’t use a style or design that you simply don’t like just because it’s trendy. You’re going to be looking at this yard every day, so make sure you enjoy what you see. Another bonus: when people come over to admire your yard design and ask you where they can buy all of those awesome plants and landscaping pieces, they’ll love hearing that they’re one-of-a-kind because you made them yourself!
Your garden should inspire you to relax and be comfortable outside.
One of the most pleasant things in life is relaxing outside in your own yard. Luckily, there are many wonderful ways to achieve this, like a hammock or a fire pit. However, you should also think about how to get comfortable in your yard without having to go buy any new features. A good place to start is the patio furniture you already have or plan on getting. It’s important that it be comfortable and fit your style, but don’t forget about the importance of cushions! Pillows and cushions can make sitting outside much more enjoyable, especially during those long summer nights.
If you’re looking for an extra level of comfort, I would highly recommend getting an outdoor water feature such as a small pond or fountain. The sound of trickling water will make you feel relaxed and calm so that you can enjoy your evening even more! You could also use this idea for some other types of garden art such as sculptures if they are not too loud – just make sure they fit into your overall design before placing them!

Hello, gardeners!
You’re probably sick of hearing about us, but we just can’t help it. We’re going to talk a little bit more about our garden.
We’ve been working on it for months now—with some setbacks here and there—but we finally have a beautiful yard. It’s so nice to sit out back with a book or drink, and the most common thing we hear is that it’s kind of like an oasis in the middle of the city. We think so too.
We thought we’d share our process with you, because maybe you’ll have some ideas for your own backyard space. It’s all about making the most of what you’ve got and finding original ways to bring elements into your design that make your space stand out from everyone else’s property.
In our case, we started with what little landscaping was already there and built off of it by adding a few key elements: the backyard fence, which borders a small park; a fountain in the center of the yard; and a raised bed for vegetables (which sometimes doubles as seating when we invite friends over).
The biggest challenge was figuring out water. In order to get water to our raised bed (so that it didn’t dry out during hot
What does your dream garden look like?
Let’s take a look at what some people are doing with their gardens (and how you can get the look!)
A lot of people are really into “zen” gardens right now, and we think it’s because they provide a great way to get away from technology—even just for a minute or two. Since zen gardens are so low-maintenance, they can be a welcome respite in the middle of the day when you’re too tired to do much else but still want to step away from your computer screen.
Plus, they’re easy to build, and they look really nice (bonus points if you have a white or light-colored home—the contrast will make your zen garden pop!). And if you have kids, we think zen gardens are going to be a hit. They’re fun for everyone!
