There’s only one thing that we could have purchased that would have made our move easier: a screwdriver set. It might not seem like an essential purchase at first, but you’ll be surprised how many screws there are in your new home! Picture this: you’re walking down the hall and hear the cat meowing from behind a door. You turn the knob, but—surprise—this particular door needs to be opened with a key. So, in order to get your cat out of wherever it is, you need to unscrew the doorknob and remove it entirely. For this, you need a screwdriver set. If you had remembered to buy one before moving into your new place, you would have saved yourself some time and effort.

In addition to letting you rescue the cat from its self-imposed prison, a screwdriver set will also let you make all sorts of emergency repairs throughout your new home. If something breaks while you’re moving in or shortly thereafter (which it probably will), having plenty of tools on hand will allow you to fix it much more quickly than if you were waiting for someone else to come over and do it for you.

2. A hand truck

A hand truck is a tool for moving heavy objects, boxes, and other things that are difficult to move with your hands. It’s incredibly useful for:

• Moving large numbers of boxes at once
• Moving heavy items like sofas and fridges
• Moving up stairs
• Moving down stairs
• Moving up a ramp
• Moving down a ramp
• And even moving things on a flat surface! (Although if the item has wheels you can probably use those instead)

3. A plant mover/dolly

• A plant mover/dolly is a great tool to have when you’re moving a lot of potted plants. They’re like hand trucks, but they’re designed to be used with only one hand—making it easier to maneuver your plants around. It’s a fantastic tool when you’re moving around heavy or cumbersome items, or simply want an extra hand to help you organize things throughout the day.
